Garrick Pang Receiving an Appreciation Award from Battalion Commander, LTC Jason E Kelly |
At Fort Hood...the 20th Engineer Battalion are known as The Lumberjacks. This battalion has faced many challenges in the past 18 months. They lost four soldiers in the shooting on November 5, 2009 and 12 during their most recent deployment. On June 30, 25 "Lumberjack" couples signed up for the Oxygen seminar sponsored by AUSA. The group included one couple who had just gotten married in May, and the majority married less than five years. The response to the seminar was overwhelmingly positive, and the couples were significantly impacted.

Recently Trained Oxygen Facilitators |
In the past two months, 28 more Oxygen for Your Relationships facilitators were trained and prepped to bring Oxygen to our communities. Included in this group were a police chaplain, YMCA volunteers, a military chaplain, several pastors, church leaders and counselor/therapists. Many of these facilitators will be key players in our fall Oxygen roll-out across the greater Puget Sound region. Just Another Sunday
Noel Meador, Executive Director
It started out like any other Sunday: dressing one kid, putting shoes on another, and trying to find the car keys that were soon found in the baby's crib. I got the kids loaded in the car, while my wife ran through the house grabbing last minute necessities...another day in the life of a young family.
As we got on the road and drove toward the church, our morning began to take a turn:
My wife: "Honey, the light is green...I think you want to turn here ...there is a motorcycle right there."
Me: (Deep breath) "Honey, I think I know how to drive."
My wife: "I know, you're just making me nervous." (Two minute pause, then she looks over her shoulder in the passenger seat as I go to change lanes).
Everything in me wanted to get defensive. To remind her how many years I have been driving and that I am perfectly capable of getting us to our destination, but I didn't. I realized this "back seat driving" had nothing to do with me.
Earlier that morning, my wife had been dealing with a hurtful situation and the emotion from that situation was greatly affecting her. Now her stress had our morning quickly speeding downhill as she suddenly became the world's worst backseat driver.

Investing in the Marriage, Not Just the Wedding
Jeff Kemp, Founder and Chief Advocate
My 24 year old son just married...During the planning process, I realized how much energy is spent creating the perfect wedding or exotic honeymoon.
With so much anticipation built up to the perfect day, are couples set up for disappointment when married life isn't perfect? Is the effort spent more on the wedding than on the relationship?
Instead of looking at the wedding as celebration unto itself, let's look at weddings through the lens of preparing for real-life relationship and see how we can help couples set up their marriage for a lifetime.
