Strengthening Fragile Families Training Institute

December 12-16, 2011

 

For over two decades, family practitioners have been working with low-income fathers and mothers from diverse backgrounds without the necessary knowledge and skills to optimize their work. The Strengthening Families Institute is a five day skills building certification program  designed to increase the capacity of individuals and agencies to be successful in working with low-income fathers, mothers, never married and married couples with children from diverse backgrounds and community settings.

 

This five day institute will train interested individuals and agencies on the history of the responsible fatherhood and healthy marriage/relationship education movement; best-practices in working with men, women, mothers, fathers and families including recruitment, retention and evaluation, and how to implement effective peer support groups. 

 

SFFTI trains practitioners in the effective use of The Fatherhood Development Curriculum and The Relationship Skills for Strong Families curriculum developed by Dr. Jeffery M. Johnson. The curriculums are based on real experiences and challenges of fragile family settings.  The curriculum also offers advice on facilitating groups and a theory of change methodology for training and participant learning.

Ready, Set, Go! 

There's still time to register for the 7th annual Families on the Run this Saturday, December 3. This fun event not only promotes health and fitness, but it's also a chance for families to do something fun together for the holidays. Runners and families from all across the region will gather to compete in the 5K, 10K or non-competitive Kiddie K Fun Jog. The Chick-fil-A Santa Cow will be on hand, and participants are invited to enjoy a hot breakfast during our holiday party at the SportsBarn following the run.

Avoid the rush of race day and pick up your race packet on Friday, December 2 at the Downtown SportsBarn between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

New Research Finds College Educated Women are More Likely to Marry 

 

Research by Krista Payne, social science data analyst, and Larry Gibbs, graduate research assistant, has found that educational attainment is positively associated with marriage. Additionally, this finding spans all racial and ethnic groups with a college degree.

Family Instability and Child Well-being 

At the annual meeting of National Council on Family Relations, held in Orlando, FL earlier this month, Co-Director Susan Brown led a symposium featuring former NCFMR grantees and a former NCFMR graduate research fellow who presented their ongoing work on family instability and child well-being. This interdisciplinary panel of scholars featured cutting-edge research on how various forms of family turbulence are linked to child and adolescent outcomes.

Hi everyone,

The Association for Filial and Relationship Enhancement® Methods (AFREM) will be holding its 2012 AFREM Annual Meeting on Saturday March 31, 2012, in Bethesda, MD. Please hold that date and plan to attend!

I am also writing to invite each of you to consider submitting a workshop proposal for the co-sponsored workshops to be offered by NIRE and AFREM in conjunction with AFREM’s Annual Meeting.

In addition, please consider inviting someone you know to submit a workshop proposal. This invitation is not limited to current members of AFREM.

The proposal can be for either a 3 hour or a 6 hour workshop, and should be in the broad areas of Relationship Enhancement and Filial methods. This includes topics involving the intersection of other methods with RE or Filial.

The likely dates for the workshops will be Friday and Saturday March 30-31, 2012, with the possibility of additional workshop(s) on Sunday April 1 depending on the number of workshop submissions and selections.

Please indicate on which days you would or would not be able to do a presentation (to give us maximum scheduling flexibility), or whether your schedule would permit you to present only on a specific day.

Please submit your ideas to me by January 20, 2012.

We hope to see you in March for good socializing, networking, and, of course, great workshops with CE credits provided.

Also, as is our custom, there will be an organized "dutch treat" dinner on Friday evening for those who would like to attend.

Military Dissertation Study - Civilian Husbands

My name is Thomas Watson, LPC, NCC and I am completing my doctoral
dissertation in Counselor Education & Supervision from the Georgia School of
Professional Psychology at Argosy University in Atlanta, GA.  I grew up in a
career military family and currently work through a contractor with military
personnel and their families.

My IRB-approved, qualitative dissertation research focuses on the experience
of civilian husbands married to military women who have deployed.  The scant
literature, thus far, discusses issues including - but not limited to -
divorce rates, gender expectations, job portability, adaptation to military
culture  and childcare during deployments.  My goal, through
phenomenological inquiry, is to determine from what additional resources
civilian husbands might benefit while their wives are deployed overseas.

If there are civilian husbands among us on the list serve that have had the
experiences listed below and would like to participate in my study, I would
be very grateful.  If any of you know of individuals that might have had the
experiences listed below and think that the persons would like to
participate in the study, please feel free to forward them my contact
information in order for me to provide more details about the study.

the civilian husbands of military wives."  Karney & Crown (2007)

Participant Experiences
1.  Civilian husbands with no current or prior military service experience
who have been married to military wives of any branch of the U.S. Armed
Services for at least five (5) years - any rank or status (i.e.,
Active-Duty, Reserve Forces, National Guard).

2.  There is at least one child under the age of 18 living in the household.

3.  There has been at least one deployment (mobilization) or duty order out
of the United States by the military wife (without her family) lasting at
least six months.

4.  There has been at least one family relocation because of the military
wife's job (i.e., transfer orders).
