"Second Chances: A Proposal to Reduce Unnecessary Divorce"

Dr. William J. Doherty and Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears (retired)

In this issue of Propositions, Dr. William J. Doherty of the University of Minnesota and Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears (retired) challenge the assumption that nothing can be done about the divorce rate in the United States. They offer a set of reforms -- The Second Chances Act -- that state legislators could adopt to help couples in crisis without making changes to the no-fault divorce system.

Their argument (which will be published later this year in a report to the nation) is based on new research suggesting that among more than a third of couples in divorce court, at least one person in the couple, and sometimes both of them, might be interested in exploring reconciliation.

In an era in which jobs and the economy are the overriding concerns, why should Americans care about the divorce rate? A solid body of social science evidence now affirms that marriage is not merely a private arrangement between two persons. It is a core social institution, one that helps to ensure the economic, social, and emotional welfare of children, women, and men. A recent study found that divorce and unwed childbearing costs taxpayers at least 112 billion dollars annually. Even a modest reduction in the U.S. divorce rate would likely benefit at least 400,000 children nationally each year and save taxpayers money.

Preparing Couples to Lead

Over its 37 year history, Better Marriages has trained thousands of couples to lead marriage enrichment and marriage education events. Comprehensive training (40 contact hours) equips couples to lead as a team. They are trained in the methods of group process and experiential, hands-on learning. Couples are prepared to lead retreats, small groups, workshops and couple classes. Though couples receive pages upon pages of resources, they are not limited to any specific curriculum. This broad-based training empowers couples to lead any program, class or event and to do so more effectively.

"Leadership Training was the best thing we've ever done for our relationship. We recommend it even to couples who don't plan to lead events, because the in-depth couple experience is phenomenal. We're closer than ever and feel competent and confident to lead any class, program or event for couples."

Leadership Training is highly recommended for lay couples in organizations that want to develop programs to effectively reach couples.

Better Marriages Leadership Training is delivered through a Leadership Training Workshop. The purpose of the Leadership Training Workshop is to help married couples develop skills for leading marriage enrichment programs, classes and events. Each Leadership Training Workshop includes 8 components. These components may be structured in a variety of ways according to the style and preference of the Trainer Couple and the needs of participating couples. The components are:

1. A marriage enrichment retreat.
2. Reflection on the marriage enrichment retreat.
3. Exposure to, and discussion of, a variety of leadership styles, resources and support systems for marriage enrichment.
4. Program/Event design.
5. Practice leadership.
6.  Marital exploration.
7. Reflection, evaluation and growth plan.
8. Encouragement of continued reading.

Mastering the Mysteries of Love

Weekend Workshops for Couples

The National Institute of Relationship Enhancement® is offering the Mastering the Mysteries of Love version of the Relationship Enhancement® Program for couples in addition to the classic version of the RE Program.

Upcoming dates:

  • July 23-24, 2011 - Mastering the Mysteries of Love with Carrie Hansen, LCSW-C
  • September 17-18, 2011 - Mastering the Mysteries of Love with Joan Liversidge, LCMFT
  • October 22-23, 2011 - Mastering the Mysteries of Love with Carrie Hansen, LCSW-C
  • November 19-20, 2011 - Mastering the Mysteries of Love with Rob Scuka, Ph.D.

Further information can be found at www.nire.org.

Research: The RE Program and Mastering the Mysteries of Love is backed by 35 years of empirical research validating its effectiveness. In addition, an award-winning meta-analytic study involving thousands of couples and over a dozen approaches, demonstrated that RE clients showed far more powerful improvement effects than clients in any of the other interventions for couples or families with which it was compared.

Description: Couples spend two days learning 10 practical skills that deepen connection and empower them to resolve current and future problems on their own.

The skills you and your partner learn will help you:

  • establish a constructive, cooperative atmosphere for resolving difficult relationship issues
  • foster increased openness and trust
  • reduce defensiveness, anger and withdrawal
  • express your deepest feelings, concerns and desires openly, honestly and safely
  • nurture deepened caring and compassion
  • increase love and affection
  • create solutions to conflicts at their deepest levels
  • successfully implement agreed-to solutions and behavioral changes

The weekend program usually numbers between 4-10 couples in order to maintain a more intimate atmosphere. It also features significant time for private couples' exercises and dialogues, which part of the time are facilitated by trained coaches.

The program is non-residential and meets on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Information on discounted hotel room rates for those visiting from out of town are available upon registration. Snacks and beverages are provided; participants have lunch on their own.
